@rajiben.vankar has been selected for the President's Swachh Sujal Samman Award for her work in recycling waste plastic through handweaving.

This news item has a very powerful story behind it - one of personal tragedy when she lost her husband at a very young age, having no recourse of fending for her 3 young children and being almost on the verge of a breakdown. The community rallied and found her a job at @khamircrafts. A silent quiet worker, she soaked in all that was on offer - one of which was training conducted by Katell Gilbert, a French designer who did a workshop for recycling waste plastic with handmade techniques. After that, there was no looking back.

Over long years and through many trials, Rajiben and Khamir built the recycled waste plastic weaving techniques with the weavers in the region. Rajiben took leadership, dealing with rag pickers, and scrap dealers, motivating weavers, and training other artisans. In the process, she found herself again.

Subsequently, she expressed the wish to become an entrepreneur. Khamir supported her initially with orders and some seed capital, along with seed funding from the @dreamsfoundation_org after which she met @nilesh.priyadarshi of @kaarigarclinic who took on the task of launching her as an entrepreneur. Kaarigar Clinic refined the products, streamlined production systems, and built her brand identity.

This award from the highest post in the land is the icing on the cake. She has built her own house now and supports a group of weavers with the orders she receives through Kaarigar Clinic. Her success has strengthened her resolve to work with women in distress. She already has 3 such women living and working with her.

This is an example of the transformation that is possible when capable but vulnerable artisans are facilitated with opportunities and support from the ecosystem. It is also a validation of how critical handmade practices are in economic, social, and mental well-being. And how in the end, success means having empathy for others and respect for the planet.

✨ Beginning the year with happy news!
We spoke about Creative Collaborations of 2022, 2023 is when we showcase the outcomes of such exchanges!

Come witness the confluence of two profound creative forces : Craft & Design
📍The Vintage Garden, Mumbai | 20-21-22 January 2023

We believe that craft and design are two faces of the same coin. In fact, in the Indian context, craft and design have always been used interchangeably. However, the market and audience inclination had skewed towards designers and reduced artisans to mere manufacturers or suppliers.

🤝🏽 We want to show the power of equitable artisan-designer partnerships initiated through our Design Mentorship programs. Looking at craft holistically, beyond products, and into practices. Artisan-designer pairs have co-created products that focus on the new potential that the world of handcrafted has to offer. 🌐

🌸🌄 A special curation of beautiful crafts from the Punjab hills, Karnataka and the picturesque North East, aimed at bringing practices, products and stories new to the Ahmedabad audience and celebrate them at @optionsahd @fit.ahmedabad

The curation and the response to it gave us a great insight into what works best for different audiences based on the geography and niche demands. It told us how crafts can be presented to the young and the experiences, to the new enthusiasts and the experts!

🛍️ It also gave the participating handmade enterprises an exposure to new platforms, spaces and markets and helped draw in intelligence on what products and presentations work at such celebrations of Indian craft and textiles.

🌈 We hope to connect our craft stories to new audiences through curation, pop-ups, experiences and more!

📸 Meeting, discussing and brainstorming with the Craft GenNext in 2022, @jaipuriicd

📱 We at, @creativedignity and @defindia have been working towards contextual digital access and knowledge for artisans so as to grow craft businesses with the relevant technology and digital presence.

@jaipuriicd and other craft-based design institutes, design exchange programs at CD and other organizations look at growth with relevant design-based solutions, effectuating new processes, material, products and stories. 💫

🌈 This meeting, in November, discussed design, technology, story-telling and a lot more! Craft-designers, Artisan leaders, young entrepreneurs all representing a new wave in the sector- reimagining traditional handmade traditions in relevant dynamic ways. Rooted in the realities and dealing with challenges on ground with both the old and the new intelligence, the GenNext is claiming their agency over their stories, practices, enterprises.

The discussion gave us insights on how we can all draw on our collective strength, address challenges with the various intelligence available to us and work on network building for the sector, create, open, participatory, egalitarian and conducive environments for young artisans to take the lead into a regenerative and dignified creative economy of the future. 🌱

After 2 years of digital interactions with artisans, for the first time we took interactions about the digital world to them offline.

A contextual digital literacy training was conducted by Creative Dignity and Digital Empowerment Foundation in June 2022, in Yalgud, Maharashtra, with 30 women artisans, from the jewelry-making cluster of Kalapuri. It truly was a journey of smart women with smartphones, discovering the digital world with their fingertips and claiming their agency over technology.

This interaction with the women gave us insights key to building our artisan digiprenuer model, the modules we needed to discuss and develop and the methods that are effective in knowledge sharing.
